The name of Elkhart came from a group of Indians camped at the mouth of the St Joseph and Elkhart rivers. It was said they believed the island that is nestled in the mouth resembles an elk's heart.

We are known as both the Band Instrument capital of the World and the Recreational Vehicle Manufacturing Center of the Nation. We are a thriving manufacturing center of Indiana. There are a variety of parks, lakes and rivers for recreation year 'round. We also have a number of annual events thoughout the year including the Jazz Festival in late June, Rhapsody in Green, Main Street Showcase of Art in August, Winterfest, New Years Family Fest, the Elkhart Air Show, and the Great Race. One of the biggest yearly events county-wide is the Elkhart County 4-H Fair in July. Education is also very important to us and it shows with a mix of schools that consistently rank among the Nation's best. Come join the 51,000 other people here and discover, for yourself, why it's been named one of 30 of America's Most Livable Communities, in a once-a-decade list by Washington-based Partners for Livable Communities.

Commerce Information

Elkhart County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state of Indiana. Over the past 10 years, our population has increased by 17%. In addition, the Elkhart-Goshen MSA has the highest concentration of manufacturing of any in the nation. Over 50% of our workforce is involved in the making of goods!

Over the past years, the area has been famous for pharmaceuticals, manufactured homes and recreational vehicles, musical instruments and auto related parts. The county is in the northern most part of Indiana, within miles of South Bend, Indiana and the Michigan border. For the busy executive, the greater Chicago area is less than two hours driving distance.

The communities of Elkhart are as diverse as our manufacturing base. Elkhart and Goshen are the largest, followed by several smaller communities (Nappanee, Middlebury, Millersburg, Wakarusa, Bristol and New Paris).

Community History

Elkhart County was one of the first areas settled in Northern Indiana. In 1830, the county held its first election. At that time, 75 votes were cast by citizens of the county and its surrounding territory. These voters elected eight people who served as the only county employees.

Since that time, Elkhart County has grown to almost 169,000 citizens. County Government has expanded to meet the needs of those citizens. Today, approximately 760 full-time employees, including 24 elected officials, provide services to the citizens of Elkhart County.

Elkhart County is located in Northern Indiana, 150 miles north/northeast of Indianapolis, 100 miles east of Chicago and 50 miles northwest of Fort Wayne.

The city of Goshen serves as the county seat. Other incorporated cities and towns within Elkhart County are Elkhart, Bristol, Middlebury, Millersburg, Nappanee and Wakarusa.
